Medical Career[edit]

Profession - Medical practitioner

Field - Nephrologist, Renal Physician and Researcher

Work institutions:

Honorary Position

Significant Awards:

Specialisations:

Sydney University[edit]

A North Sydney Boys High School alumnus, John studied medicine from 1951 to 1956 at Sydney University, where he earned prizes in biochemistry and clinical medicine. He was also made a Prosector in Anatomy.

Research Lions Renal Research Laboratory in Brisbane[edit]

Dr John K. Healy was the first  Lion's Research Fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He started the LIONS Renal Research Laboratory in Brisbane in 1966, with additional funding from the National Heart Foundation and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. During his tenure at the Lion’s Renal Research Laboratory, he published internationally recognised articles on renal research and developed a widely accepted kidney function test.[1]

LIONS Renal Research Lab at PA John with Jon Douglas and Rosebelle Graham in 1967

Post LIONS Renal Research Laboratory[edit]

In 1979 John returned to clinical work, he centered his practice on the Brisbane Clinic on Wickham Terrace, Brisbane and the Wesley Hospital. He also worked as a consultant for the Renal Unit of Royal Brisbane Hospital. At the Wesley Hospital, John started using peritoneal dialysis on a number of patients with acute renal failure. He also did the first hemodialysis there on such a patient, using a machine surplus to need from the Dialysis Unit in Townsville. This experience contributed to the initiation in 1989 of the first private dialysis unit in Brisbane, in conjunction with Dr. Philip Boyle who had a patient who came with his own machine. The Dialysis Unit has expanded over the years to become a very large private chronic Dialysis Unit.

John served for some years on the Ethics Committee of the Wesley Hospital. He became Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Wesley Hospital in 1992-3, as he was an ex-officio Member of the Wesley Hospital Board. He was made an Emeritus Fellow of that Hospital in 2003[2].
