The KTM 690 SMC and 690 SMC R are supermoto motorcycles powered by KTM's LC4 engine, and manufactured from 2009 to the present day. The 690 SMC, introduced in 2009, replaced KTM's 690 Supermoto and 690 Supermoto R. The 690 SMC nomenclature was replaced by 690 SMC R in 2012; the 690 SMC R remains in serial production as of January 2024.[1]

Background and origins[edit]

The 690 LC4 Supermoto and 690 LC4 Supermoto Prestige were introduced in 2007[2] as KTM's entry-level and premium entries into the medium-capacity street supermoto market. The LC4-powered Supermoto models shared their frame and suspension with the contemporary 690 Duke. As a direct consequence, the 690 Supermotos had suspension travel limited enough to restrict them to smooth tarmac only, leading to questions about their suitability for purpose. The 690 Supermotos also had an image problem stemming from their heavy rally raid-style upswept dual exhausts and unconventional styling. As a result, sales were poor. The 690 Supermoto range received colour, graphic and name changes in 2008[3], but sales remained poor enough to convince KTM that a fairly radical change of direction was needed.

In 2009, the 690 Supermoto range was replaced by the 690 SMC. Although retaining the 654 cm3 LC4 engine, the SMC was effectively a ground-up redesign. Its overall styling adhered more closely to established convention, meaning it could be recognized immediately as a supermoto by its target market.

Frame[edit]

All 690 SMC and SMC R models use an epoxy-coated lattice-type frame made of welded chrome-molybdenum steel tubing.[4] Unlike most other supermoto motorcycles, KTM 690 SMC and SMC R variants do not have a conventional rear subframe of metal tubing. Instead, the rear-mounted, moulded polyethylene fuel tank has a double role as the rear subframe, carrying the seat, battery and rear bodywork.

Model timeline[edit]

This timeline includes all KTM 690 690 SMC and SMC R models produced from 2009 to the present day, as well as badge-engineered variants sold with Husqvarna and Gas Gas branding.

2009[edit]

On its release, the 690 SMC directly replaced the 690 Supermoto and 690 Supermoto R. Where the 690 Supermoto range was designed to have maximum commonality with the 690 Duke, the 690 SMC was designed to have maximum commonality with the existing 690 Enduro. Components specific to the SMC include the rear shock-absorber assembly, front forks, front brake, fork triple clamps, and front fender. Suspension travel was dramatically increased from the 210mm front and rear of the 690 Supermotos to 275mm front and 265mm rear. In spite of its model name implying a engine capacity of 690 cm3, it featured the same 654 cm3 engine used in the 690 Supermoto range, developing 64 BHP.[5] WP Suspension 4860 ROMA forks and a 4618 shock absorber were standard fitment.[4]

2010-2011[edit]

Only colour and graphic changes were made to the 690 SMC for the 2010 model year.

2012-2013[edit]

In 2012, the 690 SMC was re-named the 690 SMC R, and the motorcycle received its first facelift. Graphics were changed, and the front side panels were slightly restyled.[6] The overall colouring of the motorcycle became more dramatic, with orange powder-coating replacing black for the main frame, and anodized orange wheel rims and fork triple clamps. In an effort to make the motorcycle more accessible to shorter riders, and increase commonality with the 690 Enduro R, suspension travel was reduced from 275mm front and 265mm rear to 250mm front and rear. Engine displacement was increased from 654 cm3 to 690 cm3 by re-configuring the bore and stroke from 102/80mm to 102/84.5mm, and compression was increased from 11.8:1 to 12.5:1. This resulted in a power increase from 64 BHP to 68 BHP. Oil and oil filter changes were extended from 5 000 km to 10 000 km.

2014-2018[edit]

For the 2014 year, colours and graphics were changed. The engine was updated to make it compliant with EURO 4 emissions regulations. The necessary changes included a dual-spark ignition system, ride-by-wire throttle, and software-based 'locking' of the engine ECU to prevent engine map alterations by enthusiasts. Two-channel ABS with On and Off modes was fitted to all SMC Rs as standard. A plug-in dongle was made available that allowed the ABS system to be disabled indefinitely for racing use, and a gear-position readout option was added to the instrument cluster. From 2015 to 2018, the SMC R reamined unchanged from its 2014 specification. The Husqvarna 701 Supermoto, the first of two badge-engineered KTM 690 SMC Rs, was released for the 2015 model year.[7]

2019-2020[edit]

In 2019, The SMC R received its second facelift. This comprised all-new bodywork based on the styling of KTM's EX-C models, and a new seat, with seat height reduced to further accomodate riders with shorter inseams. With Husqvarna having been a fully-owned subsidiary of KTM for some time, a push was made to increase commonality across KTM and Husqvarna models. As part of this drive, the improved engine first fitted to Husqvarna 701 models was fitted to all KTM 690 models. Engine displacement was increased from 690 cm3 to 693 cm3 by re-configuring the bore and stroke from 102/84.5mm to 105/80mm, and compression was increased from 12.5:1 to 12.7:1. This resulted in a power increase from 68 BHP to 74 BHP. A second balance shaft, located in the forward portion of the cylinder head, was also added. The WP Suspension 4860 ROMA forks and 4618 shock absorber used on earlier models were replaced with WP Suspension APEX 5448 forks and an APEX 4618 shock absorber. Suspension travel was reduced from 250mm front and rear to 215mm front and 240mm rear.[8] Traction control, and a quickshifter allowing clutchless upshifts, were fitted as standard equipment. The ABS system also received an upgrade, with a 'Cornering ABS' function and an 'Offroad mode' that disables ABS functionality on the rear wheel added. The Husqvarna 701 Supermoto's fuel tank was also fitted to the 690 SMC R, resulting in a tank size increase from 12 litres to 13.5 litres.

2021-2022[edit]

For the 2021 year, colours and graphics were changed, and the engine was updated to make it compliant with EURO 5 emissions regulations. The instrument cluster was updated to include a digital tachometer, and gear-position readout. The Gas Gas SM700, the second of two badge-engineered KTM 690 SMC Rs, was released for the 2022 model year.[9]

2023-2024[edit]

For the 2023 year, colours and graphics were changed, and a more durable LCD instrument cluster was introduced in an attempt to cure a known instrumentation breakage issue.

Known issues[edit]

The 690 SMC/SMC R, its variants, and other motorcycles that use its components have suffered from a number of persistent technical issues. These include:

  • LCD segments in the instrument cluster becoming inactive due to mechnical failure of the conductive supporting pins supporting the instrument cluster circuit board.
  • False neutrals when shifting between gears.
  • Breakages of the valve rocker arms (typically under high-mileage and/or high-stress condistions).

Variants[edit]

With the Husqvarna and Gas Gas brands currently owned by KTM, the 690 SMC R has been used as a base to produce two badge-engineered models: the Husqvarna 701 Supermoto and Gas Gas SM700. These variants use the basic KTM 690 Enduro R platform, including engine, transmission, frame, electronics, front and rear suspension, wheels, and brakes.
