Kate Lorimer (Born 10 October 1968) is a former public representative for the Democratic Alliance in South Africa. Lorimer is now living in the United Kingdom

Background[edit]

Lorimer was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and grew up in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. She holds a Masters degree Masters Degree[1] and post graduate diploma in Disaster Management from the University of the Free State Post Graduate Diploma[2] and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Africa (UNISA). Her interests include South African Politics , Emergency and Crisis Management and Community Safety Disaster Mngmnt Thesis[3]

Member of Provincial Legislature[edit]

Speeches & Media[4] In 2005, Kate Lorimer was elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and became the Shadow Minister of Housing and the Democratic Alliance (DA) political head in Soweto. She held this position until 2009. She highlighted the poor quality of housing built by the government, the misuse of funds and the lack of monitoring and evaluation by the Department of Housing Underspending[5]

In 2009, Lorimer was re-elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and was appointed as the Shadow Minister of Safety and Security, a position she held until 2019. She became the DA Political Head in the Johannesburg North West Constituency. Throughout the term Lorimer highlighted the dangerous Blue Light Brigades Blue Light Brigades[6] used to transport government Ministers, particularly the crash that crippled Thomas Ferreira in 2012 Thomas Ferreira.[7] In 2013, Lorimer prevented the appointment of a Provincial Commissioner after discovering he was facing criminal charges Gauteng top cop[8] Lorimer worked extensively in the informal settlement of Zandspruit from 2009 to 2019 Violence in Zandspruit[9]Zandspruit[10]Zandspruit Murder[11]Shack FIre Appeal[12]

In 2014, Lorimer was re-elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and was re-appointed as the Shadow Minister of Safety and Security Fifth-legislature[13] Lorimer highlighted the plight of missing women in Gauteng Missing Women[14]

In 2019, Lorimer was re-elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and was appointed as the Shadow Minister for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements (Housing). GPL Committee Membership[15]Dodgy Tenders[16] Lorimer was an elected caucus whip for approximately 7 of her 10 years in the legislature Caucus-leadership-2019[17]

Ward Councillor in the City of Johannesburg[edit]

In 1995, Lorimer was elected as a ward councillor in the Northern Metropolitan Sub-structure NMLC of the City of Johannesburg and as the caucus Chief Whip. Lorimer also worked in the informal settlement of Zevenfontein.

In 1996, Lorimer was concomitantly elected as a proportional representation councillor in the Greater Johannesburg Transitional Metropolitan Council

In 2000, Lorimer was re-elected as a ward councillor in the City of Johannesburg and as a caucus whip. During this term Lorimer chaired a task team to investigate the workload of Councillors and put in place new methods of performance appraisal. She also chaired a task team to investigate and determine problems affecting the Motor Licensing Department of the City of Johannesburg. The team made 15 recommendations for improvement, with 13 being implemented, resulting in an improved service to the community. She also built the DA's profile in the Diepsloot informal settlement, north of Johannesburg. highlighting the plight of people moved from the Far East Bank of Alexandra township Far East Bank[18]

Founder and Co-ordinator Douglasdale/Indaba Trauma Support Unit[edit]

In 1999 Lorimer founded a trauma debriefing unit to support the victims/survivors of violent crime. Together with Annetresia Parker, Lorimer recruited and trained volunteer counsellors who provided debriefing 24 hours a day. This extended to victims of other traumas such as motor vehicle crashes. The unit closed in 2009.Annetresia Parker[19]
