The Knipovich Ridge was named after Russian zoologist Nikolai Knipovich.[1] The ridge stretching over 500 kilometer, is a segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge located to the north of Jan Mayen in the Arctic Ocean. It transitions to Mohns Ridge in the south and ends at Molloy Deep in the north.
Geological Survey of Norway published a report from an aeromagnetic survey undertaken in 2016, results from which were used to reconstruct plate tectonic development of the area.[2]
An expedition in July-August 2022 led by MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen discovered hydrothermal activity with sulphide deposits in the Jøtul hydrothermal field, located along the ridge.[3][4]
