Leigh M. Rothschild, is an American patent holder based in Miami, Florida. Rothschild is considered a fervent patent troll by Electronic Frontier Foundation, the organization having awarded him the "Stupid Patent of the Month" award on multiple occasions.

Electronic Frontier Foundation[edit]

On August 31, 2015, Rothschild was first awarded "Stupid Patent of the Month" by the EFF for his patent pertaining to an internet connected drink mixer.[1] The patent in question, is US Patent No. 8,788,090 "System and method for creating a personalized consumer product."[2]

On November 30, 2016, the EFF awarded Rothschild with another "Stupid Patent of the Month."[3] The award was granted to US Patent No. 8,856,221 "System and method for storing broadcast content in a cloud-based computing environment," first filed on October 15, 2012 and issued October 7, 2014.[4]

Rothschild most recent award of "Stupid Patent of the Month" from the EFF was on January 30, 2023.[5] This time, it pertains to US Patent No. 9,054,860 "Digital verified identification system and method," which was first filed in 2015 on June 8, and issued June 9.[6]

Litigation[edit]

Valve Corporation v. Rothschild[edit]

Most recently, Rothschild has had a suit filed against him by Valve Corporation. The suit alleges that a limited liability company affiliated with Rothschild threatened litigation against Valve Corporation in relation to supposed infringement of US Patent No. 8,856,221, despite a 2016 licensing agreement.[7][8]
