Lilja Rúriksdóttir (born August 27, 1991) is an Icelandic dancer and a choreographer. She embarked on her dance journey at a young age, training extensively in Reykjavík before pursuing formal education at The Juilliard School in New York. With a passion for contemporary dance, Lilja currently thrives as a member of L.A. Dance Project under the direction of Benjamin Millepied. Her dedication to the art form has led her to blend classical technique with innovative styles, captivating audiences worldwide. She is known for acting in the short-film Aska (2021).[3]
Early life and career[edit]
Lilja Rúriksdóttir was born on August 27, 1991, in Reykjavík, Iceland. She graduated from The Juilliard School's dance department in New York and currently collaborates with L.A. Dance Project in Los Angeles, led by Benjamin Millepied, a prominent figure in contemporary dance.[4]
A 25-year-old dancer, Lilja has dedicated 22 years to her craft. Her journey began at Edda Scheving Dance School at the age of three, followed by the Iceland Academy of the Arts, and later the Joffrey Ballet School in Manhattan at 17.[5]
Reflecting on her time at Joffrey, Lilja recalls being torn about pursuing dance due to her dissatisfaction with ballet's rigidity. She auditioned for Juilliard, viewing it as a pivotal opportunity. Her acceptance was a moment of immense joy, given Juilliard's esteemed reputation.[6]
At Juilliard, Lilja crossed paths with her now-husband, Aaron Moten, a fellow artist in the drama department, and Icelandic actor Þorvaldur Davíð Kristjánsson.[7]
Career[edit]
Post-graduation, Lilja worked as a freelance dancer in New York, securing consistent dance projects. Aaron also found success in acting, appearing in Off-Broadway productions and television series. Notably, he portrayed Avery in "The Flick," now staged at City Theatre.[8]
In September 2015, Lilja joined L.A. Dance Project, founded by Benjamin Millepied in 2012. The group's performances, including their recent piece in London, blend classical technique with diverse influences, featuring compositions by Philip Glass.[9]
Looking ahead, Lilja aims to further her career in Los Angeles, inspired by her and Aaron's achievements. She aspires to establish her own dance group in Iceland, focusing on choreography.[10]
