OPM Singer-songwrited Luis Cortez

[edit]

Ramon Luisito Cortez also known as Luis Cortez (born December 11, 1990) is a Filipino singer-songwriter most commonly known for his Christian songs[1] including "Sanctification" and as the back-up vocalist and acoustic guitarist of top OPM artist Moira dela Torre.

Early Life[edit]

Luis was born to Filipino back-up vocalist, vocal coach and arranger Elise Goloy Cortez[2][3], and marketing executive and photographer, Ricardo Cortez. Luis got his start in music early on, belonging to a musically-inclined family and being exposed to worship music even from an early age.

Career[edit]

His journey as a professional musician took off in 2014, when he was selected among thousands of applicants to be part of the prestigious Elements Music Camp [4]- an intensive camp for a chosen group of new singer-songwriters to be mentored by OPM greats such as Ryan Cayabyab, Ogie Alcasid, Noel Cabangon, Ebe Dancel, Chito Miranda, and others.

In 2015, while playing at a bar gig, he was introduced to Moira dela Torre who was at that season interested in forming a band due to her increasing popularity, having appeared in The Voice Philippines and winning at Himig Handog. Luis was invited as her back-up vocalist and acoustic guitarist[5], and it was the beginning of their working relationship and friendship, even appearing together to perform their version of One Republic's song Something I Need in the movie Everything About Her in 2016.

Since then, Luis has pursued music full-time — going on solo gigs and session work for other artists, writing several original OPM and Christian songs of his own, and guesting on Christian media channels such as SAVED Radio, Driven By The Gospel, and YesHeIs[6], as well as interpreting songs for PAPURI!, which features classic Tagalog Christian music. He has also collaborated with other Filipino artists including co-writing for Keiko Necesario's song "Dito Ka Lang”, which has earned over a million streams on Spotify to date.

In September 2023, Luis launched his latest single "Kung Hindi Mo Na Kaya" , a fresh, upbeat take on an OPM song he first wrote back in 2013.

Evident in his music is Luis’ belief that songwriting can be used as a powerful tool to inspire. More keen on working on his own music now more than ever, Luis hopes to encourage the younger generation to write songs that will spark hope and make a difference in the world, as they navigate through the highs and lows of life.

Personal Life[edit]

Luis married events host and former SAVED Radio DJ Ren dela Cruz in a Christian ceremony in June 7, 2021. Luis and Ren are followers of Christ who adhere to Reformed Baptist theology, and are covenant members of Christ's Heritage Church.
