Marcus Rivera is the mayor of Barnwell, South Carolina. He is the firdt African American to hold the office.[1][2] He attended Barnwell High School.

He was elected in 2019 to fill an unexpired term and then re-elected for a full 4-year term the same year.[3] He held a mayor's gala February 8, 2020, as part of Black History Month celebrations.[4]

Rivera work for AT&T and is head basketball coach at Barnwell High School.[5] The city held an executive session to resolve allegations Rivera pushed through a building permit for an addition to his home used as a hair salon by his wife despite covenamts prohibiting such home businesses.[6] The city's board of zoning appeal rescinded the permit. Rivera said the business would continue to operate and the board did not have the power to rescind tbe permit for an active business.[7]
