Marika Gidali (born April 29, 1937)[1]in Budapest, Hungary, is a Jewish dancer performer, teacher, and choreographer.[1] She was a survivor of the Holocaust and moved to Brazil after her survival. She began dance training at the Carmen Brandão School in São Paulo, Brazil, under the instruction of Professor Serge Murchatovsky.[2] Marika found her affection for dance and viewed dance as a way to express the Holocaust and cry. She founded a school in the mid-1960s when the art of Brazil was in the repressive military dictatorship, and it served as the meeting place for artists. Marika continuously established the dance group "Affirmation" to solve the dancing problems in Brazil.[1]

Work

  • In October 1971, she founded, Ballet Stagium, a renowned Brazilian ballet company, well-known for its dedication to political activism. The company centers its work on addressing issues like racism, violence, oppression, and genocide.[3]
  • In 2000, she received recognition from UNICEF and founded the Ladybug project, which uses dance and various other art forms to promote social inclusion.[4]
