Mathew Tom (b. 1984) is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York City.[1]
Biography[edit]
Tom was born in Sarasota, Florida.[1] He holds an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and also studied Fine Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Tom has been the recipient of prestigious fellowships and residencies, including the Starr Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Arts in London.[2] The artist has participated in numerous group shows in the US and abroad including Manscaping[3] at The Hole contemporary art gallery in New York, Los Angeles and Superzoom in Paris.[4] Tom's first solo exhibition in London Welcome to Paradise debuted at the Hoxton Art Gallery in Shoreditch, east London, in 2012.[5] In December 2023 Tom's solo exhibition Secrets of the Garden opened at the Hole contemporary art gallery in New York City.[6]
Work[edit]
Tom creates his paintings in oil on linen.[6] [7] [8]The artist combines images that are of symbolic significance in both Eastern and Western cultures.[6] Since 2011, Tom has been developing a series of work called 'The Society of Friends,' in which he incorporates characters from Asian and European artistic traditions to create his own utopian world.[6]
