Muhammed Nazmul Islam is a Bangladeshi-Turkish political scientist. He currently serving as the Head of Türkiye, Asia, and Indo-Pacific Studies (TAIPS) at the Institute for International Relations and Strategic Research (ULİSA) at Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University (AYBU), Türkiye.[1][2]. He also holds the position of Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at the university. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Additionally, he serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Ankara University, Türkiye.[11][12] In August 2021, he was appointed to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Turkish Parliament (TBMM) as a Special Advisor (Asia-Pacific Region) of the Foreign Relations and Protocol Department.[13][14]

His work has focused on international relations and IR theories, and has made contributions to a wide range of topics in emerging and rising powers soft strategy, great power strategic competition, soft power, public diplomacy, Asian politics, media, communication and conflict resolution. Additionally, he developed the concepts of “power of bonding” and is one of the great contributors in “non-western international relations theory” and “non-western soft power strategy”. He is one of the critics of Joseph S. Nye’s theory of soft power.

Islam’s areas of specialization and teaching expertise include Research in Politics, Public Diplomacy, Soft Power, Asia and Indo-Pacific Strategy, Theories of International Relations, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Political Communication, Policy and Politics of Human-Robotics Interaction, and World Politics. His primary research interests revolve around the policies, politics, and foreign policies of middle and emerging powers in the changing international politics.

Career[edit]

Islam is Head of Türkiye, Asia, and Indo-Pacific Studies (TAIPS) at the Institute for International Relations and Strategic Research (ULİSA)[1][2] and an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University (AYBU), Türkiye [3][4][5].[6] [7][8][10] Besides his permanent job place, he also teaches postgraduate courses including but not limited to the “cultural diplomacy and communication” and media & political communication” at the Department of Media and Communication at Ankara University and “peace, conflict and media” course at the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at Social Sciences University of Ankara, Türkiye.

In August 2021, he was appointed to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey - Turkish Parliament (TBMM) as a Special Advisor (Asia-Pacific Region) of the Foreign Relations and Protocol Department. During his tenure, he did several high-profile visits in many places around the world including the High-profile OIC delegation visits in the Rohingya camps in Bangladesh.[15][16] He was one of the delegates of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and committee of Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC) delegation team visits Rohingya camps in Bangladesh. He was one of the representatives and rapporteurs from Turkish Parliament who visited and made a huge contribution in a long report on the situation of Muslim minorities in Germany, France and Myanmar which was later passed in the 17th session of the conference of the Parliamentary Union of member nations of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UP-OIC) on 26-30 January 2023 by adopting resolutions and strategies . In addition to, he also represented Turkish parliament as “in Commemoration of 15 years of APA Achievements in Asia” at the Asian Parliamentary Assembly on 17 May 2022 and he had modest contribution in Turkish Parliament Team to host two-day meetings of the Executive Council of the 13th Plenary Session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA)[17][18][19]. Having previously held the prestigious ERASMUS Research Fellowship at the Europa Institute, Saarland University, Germany, and worked as a Research Associate in a joint project between the University of Cambridge (Judge Business School) and BRAC, Dr. Islam has a wealth of research experience. Throughout his career, he worked in different positions and projects conducted at the University of Cambridge, UK; Saarland University, Germany; University of Trento, Italy; Greifswald University, Germany; Ankara University, Türkiye; OIC-SESRIC, BRAC University, Bangladesh; BRAC, Bangladesh; Grameen Bank-Yunus Center, Bangladesh; UNDP, Bangladesh; and YTB, Türkiye as a consultant, research fellow and policy analyst.[20] He is also an Associate Editor (Handling) of the Humanities and Social Sciences Communications Journal.

Islam’s research has been published in esteemed journals such as International Affairs; Communication & Society (SCOPUS, Q1;[21][22] Journal of Asian & African Studies; Contemporary Review of the Middle East (WOS-ESCI, Q2; The Arab World Geographer (SCOPUS, Q3; and Journal of Globalization Studies (SCOPUS, Q3, Jadavpur Journal of International Relations(SCOPUS), Asian Profile (SCOPUS), Otoritas : Jurnal Ilmu Pemerintahan (WOS-ESCI) and Insight Turkey (WOS-ESCI, Q2). Additionally, he has presented his work at over 30 conferences held at renowned institutions including the University of Toronto, Canada & Oxford University, UK etc. His contributions are available in the Türkiye’s Ministry of Youth and Sports- Journal of Youth Research and[23][24][25]
