Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros is a 2023 documentary film edited, co-produced, and directed by Frederick Wiseman. The film follows the Troisgros family's operation of a Michelin starred restaurant in central France.[1] It premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2023, and premiered in the United States at the New York Film Festival on October 7, 2023.
Synopsis[edit]
The film follows the Troisgros family and their restaurants in the French countryside. Wiseman showcases various day-to-day operations involved in running the restaurants, such as ingredient sourcing, menu planning, and food service.[2] The film primarily focuses on Le Bois sans Feuilles (The Woods Without Leaves), but also features two other restaurants in the area owned by the family.[1]
Like Wiseman's other documentaries, the film uses only observational footage with no interviews, music, or voiceover narration.[3]
Production[edit]
The documentary was conceived in 2020, after Wiseman had lunch at the Troisgros restaurant and asked the chef to film a documentary without any prior planning. Filming took place with a four-person crew over 35 consecutive days in 2020.[4]
Reception[edit]
Critical response[edit]
The film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, scoring 100% from both critics and audiences on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.[5] On Metacritic, the film holds a score of 91 out of 100, indicating "universal acclaim".[6]
Manohla Dargis of The New York Times called the film "deeply pleasurable", praising Wiseman's "analytical and dialectical" approach.[1] Both Variety and Eater noted the rhythmic nature of the film and described it as "mesmerizing".[7][8]
Box office[edit]
As of March 15, 2024, the film has grossed an estimated $140,348 in the United States since its release.[9]
