Humberto Ferreira de Mendonça, has been a Master of Capoeira in Brazil. He is also known as Mestre Sapo by practitioners of this discipline.

Contribution to Capoeira and National Recognition[edit]

His contribution to the development of Capoeira has been recognized as a form of care and preservation of the regional and national culturale heritage.[1]

In fact, Capoeira is a martial art born between African coasts (Angola) and Brazil during Atlantic slave trade.[2] In 2014, the Roda (formation) of Capoeira has been declared Intangible cultural heritage of Humanity by Unesco.[3]

His formation in the traditional Brazilian discipline of Capoeira sets in the footsteps of Mestre Pastinha, the founder of capoeira Angola, Mestre Joao Grande, Mestre Moraes.[4] He developed their work which was about researching the original African roots of Capoeira Angola.

Following his contribution social and cultural work, he was declared Patron of Capoeira in Pernambuco from the municipality of Recife in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil.[5] [6] His work contributed to the fortune and diffusion of Capoeira, the Brazilian national martial art, in various European countries, such as Germany and Italy.[7] He contributed to form masters of capoeira who nowadays formed their own groups and are spreading his teaching around Europe, including Contramestre Lagartixa, Mestra Nazare, Mestra Di, Mestre Nino Faisca.[8]
