Miquel Bernardo Arroyo was born in 1954, Barcelona, Spain. He is a psychiatrist and a Full Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Barcelona. Is known for his work in the field of schizophrenia and related disorders.[1][2]

Early life[edit]

Miquel Bernardo Arroyo completed his medical studies at the University of Barcelona, graduating in 1978. He completed his residency training at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and obtained his specialization in Psychiatry in 1982. In 1983, he received the End-of-Residency Award from the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. He earned his PhD in medicine from the University of Barcelona in 1991, graduating Cum Laude.[citation needed]

Research[edit]

Bernardo is a researcher in the field of schizophrenia.[3] His research primarily focuses on initial psychotic episodes, early stages of the illness, physical health, lifestyle factors, biomarkers, translational and precision psychiatry, inflammation in schizophrenia, neuropsychology, psychological interventions, psychometric testing, neuropsychopharmacology, and biological therapies. Bernardo is the lead investigator for PEPs and 2 EPs (Spanish coordinated multicenter projects) involving 16 hospitals in the follow-up of patients with first psychotic episodes over 15 years.[4] These projects focuses on identifying genetic and environmental factors of risk and their interaction in the appearance of a first-episode psychosis. Also, these projects have generated around 67 publications at the moment with an impact factor of 285 in the journals of schizophrenia and psychosis.[5]

Career[edit]

Having more than 30 years of professional experience, Miquel Bernardo is presently a professor at the University of Barcelona, Spain, coordinator of Psychiatry. During his tenure at the University Clínic Hospital of Barcelona, he held different positions including Senior Consultant, Founder and Director of the Schizophrenia Clínic Unit.[citation needed]

He was principal investigator of the CIBERSAM Schizophrenia Program at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and currently Group lider of the schizophrenia at the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi I Sunyer (IDIBAPS).

Awards and honors[edit]

Bernardo has been honored with many awards including Institut d'Estudis Catalans Prize, August Pi-Sunyer Award for his research career, Catalan Society of Psychiatry, Best in Class Award for the Best Schizophrenia Unit of the National Health Service, Professional Excellence Award by the College of Physicians of Barcelona and the Spanish Society of Psychiatry's Award (2019) for his professional career. Bernardo has been awarded an International Distinguished Fellowship by the American Psychiatric Association and is an Honorary Partner of several scientific societies including Psychiatric Association of Latin America, Spanish Society of Dual Pathology, and Spanish Society of Biological Psychiatry.[6] He is currently the president of the Spanish Foundation for Psychiatry and Mental Health (FEPSM).[7]

Bernardo published 16 books some of which have been republished, and written 75 book chapters. More than 430 articles and they have an overall impact factor of 2293.41 (FI JCR 2021) and an H-Index of 51 (SCOPUS).
