Miss Polly Had a Dolly is a 2023 short film directed by Pietro Lafiandra, Flavio Pizzorno, and Andrea Rossini, premiered at the 41st Torino Film Festival.[1][2] It is recognized as one of the first examples of cinema created using artificial intelligence.[3][4][5][6] Movie production was made possible by the widespread availability of 'text-to-video' algorithms..[7]

Plot[edit]

Set in the Sonoran Desert, inside a bunker used for the cryogenic preservation of deceased millionaires' bodies, two guardians and lovers discuss the condition of one of the corpses – her husband.

Production[edit]

Miss Polly Had a Dolly stands out for being created using Generative Artificial Intelligence[3]. The shots were produced using RunwayML's Gen-2 models,[8] PikaLabs,[9] and ZeroScope.[10] The 'text-to-video' models allowed the directors to create shots for the film without resorting to traditional animation techniques but rather using online services that enable users to generate visuals through natural language text descriptions. The only stage of the film's production that did not involve algorithms was post-production,[11] while artificial intelligence was involved in all other aspects.[12] The screenplay was crafted with the help of OpenAI's GPT-3, whose dialogues were performed by the vocal deepfakes of Scarlett Johansson and Peter Weller[13] conceived through the use of artificial neural networks.[14] The soundtrack was composed by the Milanese alternative rock band Limonov with the assistance of the MusicGen music generation model..[15]

Distribution[edit]

The film was showcased in competition at the Torino Film Festival 2023[16] within the Spazio Italia section.
