Mohamad Nabil Hegab,[2][3] (Arabic: محمد حجاب; (1991-10-05)October 5, 1991)[3][4] better known online as Mohammed Hijab, is a British Egyptian Islamic philosopher, debater, public speaker, and YouTuber who engages in discussions and polemics on a wide variety of topics including religion, politics and society. He is co-founder of Sapience Institute.[5] Hijab has gained prominence for his engagement in political and ideological matters, particularly those concerning Islam.[6] Mohammed Hijab advocates for Islam using contemporary philosophical approaches and has featured prominent personalities like Noam Chomsky, Jordan Peterson, and Andrew Tate on his podcast, which he initiated in 2020.[7]

Early & Personal life[edit]

Hijab was born in London's St Mary's Hospital to a family originating from Alexandria, Egypt.[8] However, he faced setbacks in his career path when he lost his chance to become a certified teacher after participating in a counter-protest against the far-right figure Tommy Robinson, resulting in his dismissal.[9] He asserts a height of 6'7" (201 cm) and identifies as a Sunni Muslim. Known to be associated with Ali Dawah, Hijab pursued work as both a tutor and a freelancer, and he also underwent training as a teacher at Harris Academy Rainham.[8]

He is part of a family of two brothers and two sisters. His marriage in 2011 is to a woman whose name remains undisclosed. He shares glimpses of his children on social media but takes care not to disclose their identities. He is of Egyptian heritage and resides in Townshend Estate, London.[10]

Career[edit]

Hijab has experience as both a tutor and a freelancer.[11][12] He previously served as a trainee teacher at Harris Academy Rainham but was terminated after expressing his intention to participate in a freedom of speech rally in Whitehall, where he declared his willingness to "fight and die." Additionally, Hijab holds roles as the Co-Founder of Sapience Institute and Academic Coordinator for Islam Net.[13][14]

Hijab is mainly known for his online debates and social media presence. One of his most popular debates was with David Wood, an anti Islamic Christian apologist.[15] He typically engages in debates with individuals of differing beliefs regarding religion in his videos, advocating for Islam. His inaugural video, released on June 16, 2015, focused on teaching the pronunciation of the Arabic alphabet. Subsequent videos predominantly revolved around Islam, featuring challenges and debates with fellow YouTubers and others on subjects spanning religion and politics. Frequently, he endeavors to refute atheism in certain videos and holds opposition to liberalism.

In October 2023, he appeared in an episode of Piers Morgan where they discuss the Israel-Hamas war. One month later, he was invited again to Piers Morgan where he debated Rabbi Shmuley on the Israel-Hamas war. He received a lot of attention from his Piers Morgan debates.[16][17][18]

Criticism[edit]

He has faced condemnation for expressing racist sentiments and discriminatory views towards other religions. In September 2022, during a public sermon in Leicester, he disparaged Hindus by suggesting that belief in reincarnation equated to being reincarnated into individuals he deemed as weak and cowardly. Additionally, he made baseless accusations, falsely alleging assaults on Muslims while accusing members of the Hindu community of attempting to portray themselves as ‘gangstas’ gangsters. These remarks were widely interpreted as promoting animosity towards Hindus.[19]

Following the altercation, old footage emerged of him openly expressing anti-Semitic sentiments and even making threats towards a police dog that Jewish boys had brought with them. However, a person narrating the video claimed that Hijab had threatened to harm the police dog. The narrator also mentioned facing a violent attack while leaving a kosher restaurant along with others. This video has gained significant attention after being circulated, highlighting the harassment experienced by some Jewish individuals in London. These individuals found themselves amidst a 'Free Palestine' rally, where instead of advocating for peaceful resolution in the region, Mohammed Hijab is depicted making anti-Semitic comments and inciting Muslim citizens against Jews. The footage shared by writer and commentator Wasiq Wasiq from the Henry Jackson Society depicts Hijab stating, "We’ll find some Jews there. We want some Zionists." [19]
