Monzari (born in 1996) is a multidisciplinary draughtsman.
Biography[edit]
Monzari[1] is a Congolese artist and lawyer. A state graduate in Latin-philosophy, he obtained his law degree from the University of Kinshasa in 2020. Although he never attended a fine arts academy, he developed his artistic talent as a self-taught artist.
Real name Richard Nzaaba MONSEMBULA, Monzari has been drawing since he could hold a pencil. It was at the Bokoro minor seminary that he discovered his passion for drawing, and during his university studies, he decided to pursue this passion. Drawing portraits in his spare time at the faculty and auditorium, he drew attention to himself and began to make a name for himself. Visionary and hard-working, Monzari is an inspiration to the young talents of his generation, demonstrating that it is possible to combine utility and passion through discipline and hard work.
Today, Monzari combines his career as an artist with his profession as a lawyer at the MaiNdombe Court of Appeal. He is in charge of a workshop of over 15 artists, the first to specialize in pencil portraits, as well as a range of services related to drawing and cultural events.
Much in demand by private individuals and art collectors, he devotes much of his time to creating paintings for exhibitions, as well as mentoring these young talents.
Monzari is also known for his many merits. In 2019 and 2020, he broke the record for the highest number of paintings produced as a portrait artist in the DRC, with over 154 and 156 paintings respectively. (source : Arts.cd). In 2021, he broke this record again, creating more than 200 portraits. (Actualité.cd[2], Mbote.cd[3]). In 2022, he was nominated for the Plastic Art Ambassador Award in the drawing category by Jered People.
As for his exhibitions, Monzari has taken part in group shows such as L'Art plein les yeux at Kinshasa's Hôtel Joliparc in 2018, as well as the Empreinte LIYOLO[4] exhibition at the Fondation Liyolo in 2021[5]
In addition to his career as an artist, Monzari has also been a portrait drawing trainer and framer of young talent since 2020. He obtained his law degree in 2021, defending the protection of cultural heritage and Congolese law. In 2022, he became a barrister at the Mai-Ndombe Court of Appeal.
