MoonPay Inc. (MoonPay) is a web3 infrastructure company active in more than 160 countries.[1] Its core products help users convert between fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies using payment methods like debit and credit card and Apple Pay.[2]

The company also releases products that make other aspects of web3 easier for users. NFT Checkout, for example, which was released shortly after 2021’s Non-fungible token boom, allows users to buy NFTs with a credit or debit card.[3]

MoonPay won “Best Cryptocurrency Purchasing Site” at the annual FinTech Breakthrough Awards in 2021 and 2022.[4]

History[edit]

MoonPay was founded in 2018 by co-founders Ivan Soto-Wright and Victor Faramond.[5]

In November 2021, the company closed an historic $555 million Series A financing round that raised its valuation to $3.4 billion.[6]At the time, this was the largest and highest valued Series A for any bootstrapped crypto company globally.[7]It was later announced that $87 million of this funding was sourced from 60 high-profile investors, including celebrities such as Bruce Willis, Diplo, James Corden, Kate Hudson, and Paris Hilton.[8]

In January 2022, MoonPay launched NFT Checkout: a plug-and-play solution that allows users to purchase an NFT with a credit or debit card.[9]The product has been used to facilitate payments for NFT drops, and is integrated in leading NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea.[10]

MoonPay was named to CNBC's tenth annual Disruptor 50 list in May 2022.[11]Companies were chosen after a selection process using CNBC’s proprietary Disruptor 50 methodology. Although financials were not the primary nomination criteria, in total the firms named to the list have raised a half-trillion dollars in venture capital.[12]

In June 2022, MoonPay launched HyperMint: a self-service platform that enables users to create and deploy smart contracts at scale.[13] Brands that have used HyperMint include Universal Studios[14], Alo Yoga[15], and FTR[16].

In October 2022, MoonPay announced its partnership with CR Flamengo, Brazil’s most popular football team.[17]As part of the partnership, MoonPay will help Flamengo leverage NFTs and web3 to deepen fan engagement. MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright visited Flamengo’s headquarters in Rio to sign the deal and was presented with the new basketball jersey for the 2022-23 season. The jersey has MoonPay’s logo emblazoned on the back.

In November 2022, MoonPay hired Keith Grossman as its President of Enterprise.[18]From 2019-2022, Grossman was President at Time (magazine), where he pioneered the media company’s NFT business.

In December 2022, MoonPay received a license with the Financial Conduct Authority, a financial regulatory body in the United Kingdom.[19]
