Ice hockey vs floorball

Ice hockey and floorball, both are similar in some ways, but very different in other ones. They share the same basics – you have a stick and a ball (puck), that you need to get to the other team’s net. Then there are the rules, which are the key difference.

Hockey is a winter sport, that almost everyone knows. You play it on ice, (that’s why it’s called ice hockey), you have a puck that has to get into the other team’s net in order for you to score. There are 6 players on the ice by your team - 1 goalkeeper, 2 “defensemen” and 3 “forwards”. You can also choose to play without a goalie, but with 6 normal players. Unlike in floorball goalie has hockey stick and sits there in a weird position. The game is approximately 60 minutes long and is split into thirds. Hockey game gets paused by events like foul, offside, and by many others. There are total of 4 officials – 2 referees and 2 linesmen. If you are wondering, of course they have to be from different countries than the teams playing. One thing that I didn’t mention, is that in hockey, you wear protective gear, in case something happens. Hockey is also more popular than floorball, which results in bigger championships.

Floorball is a sport, that can be played no matter the weather. Instead of hockey sticks, you have floorball sticks, they are lighter and made from plastic, instead of puck, you simply have a ball, and the last important difference in gear, is that you don’t wear any protective gear. In game, there are 5 players - 1 goalkeeper, 2 “forwards” and 2 “defenders”. The same rule with goalkeeper applies here - you can play without him, but with one more normal player. In floorball, goalie doesn’t have floorball stick, he has just gloves and he kneels in the goal. There are no linesmen, just 2 referees, watching the whole game. The game is also split in third, each lasts 20 or 15 minutes, depending on the players – usually, when there are juniors playing, one third is 15 minutes long. There is also an organization IFF – international floorball federation, something like IIHF, but smaller. Both are really fun, what only matters are your preferences. One downside of hockey is, that you probably don’t get a chance to play it when there is warn outside, but also, you barely play floorball in winter. I recommend trying them if you are bored.
