New York Loose was a rock band from New York City in the early 1990s, known for blending punk, rock, and glam influences. They gained attention for their energetic performances and distinctive sound led by frontwoman Brijitte West. Despite a relatively short career, they left a lasting impact on the underground music scene.
History[edit]
NY Loose.[1] emerged as the brainchild of Brijitte West[2], a female guitarist and songwriter deeply influenced by the rock and glam genres of the 1970s. Over time, there have been frequent lineup changes; owever, Danny Nordhal remained a consistent member throughout the majority of the band's career. Despite being the frontwoman and primary songwriter, Brijitte made the unconventional decision to name the band NY Loose[3], drawing inspiration from Iggy and the Stooges' song "Loose" and her affection for her beloved city.
By the mid-90s, NY Loose[4] had ascended to the upper echelons of New York City's rock culture, gracing iconic venues like CBGBs. Their reputation spread rapidly as they embarked on self-managed tours, supporting a series of self-released singles and their first major EP, "Loosen Up," featuring a provocative cover image of Brijitte in a moment of sonic ecstasy.
The band's dynamic performances and Brijitte West's magnetic presence positioned them as rising stars in the 90s rock scene, garnering attention even before the digital age. They embarked on extensive tours across the eastern seaboard, the southern United States, and England, earning acclaim from influential British music publications like NME and Melody Maker.
Upon their return to the States in 1997, NY Loose attracted the interest of major record labels, leading to a showcase tour in Los Angeles' legendary clubs. However, a misguided decision to sign with the wrong label, influenced by their manager Andy Gould, and Hollywood Records' failure to grasp Brijitte's artistic vision, resulted in their debut major release, "Year Of The Rat" (1998), struggling to gain traction.
NY Loose's most popular song was "Pretty Suicide" from the classic NY Loose album "Year of the Rat".
In 1996. "Spit[5]" appeared on the soundtrack for "The Crow: City of Angels" as well as the 7'' split vinyl together with the Hole's Gold Dust Woman (Hole)[6]
NY Loose covered the song Sunday Morning (The Velvet Underground).[7]
Despite its initial setbacks, "Year of The Rat" has since attained cult status and is revered by contemporary rock influencers. The band's vinyl releases have become highly sought-after collectibles. Unfortunately, NY Loose[8] disbanded shortly after parting ways with Hollywood Records in 1998.
