He graduated in 1989 from St. Albans School in Washington, DC while his father was Ambassador to the United States. He then attended Princeton University. On 2 August 1990, after Nawaf completed his first year at Princeton, Iraq invaded Kuwait; Nawaf took a one-year leave of absence to volunteer as a special assistant to his father, the Ambassador, at the Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Washington. There, he coordinated the ambassador's relations with the US Congress.[2] After returning to Princeton, he completed a bachelor's degree in international relations, magna cum laude, at the Princeton School for Public and International Affairs in 1994. He wrote a senior thesis titled Preserving the Gulf War Victory: A Kuwaiti National Security Policy under the supervision of professors Richard Ullman and Aaron Friedberg.[3] At Princeton, he was a member of the Ivy Club. He served as the head of KPC's Washington Office from 2002 to 2004, where he was responsible for developing downstream business opportunities and policy analysis in the United States. In 2005, he returned to Kuwait to become KPC's General Counsel. Additionally, he served as a board member of KPC Holdings (Aruba) AEC and MEGlobal, an olefins joint venture involving KPC's petrochemicals subsidiary. In 2013, Nawaf was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company, KPC's international upstream business. He held that position for nine years. In 2019, he was concurrently appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait Petroleum International, KPC's international downstream subsidiary that operates under the "Q8" brand.
