Niko Marzouca is an American born music producer and mixing engineer. He has mixed for a variety of musical artists, from British rapper KSI to country pop star Carrie Underwood. His credits include Becky G, Pharrell, Usher, ASAP Rocky, Mary J Blige, Pitbull, and Damian Marley, to name a few.[1] Marzouca has worked on several Grammy Award winning albums as an engineer, songwriter and producer.[1][2] He also won an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Award in 2013 for Composition on Usher's Lemme See.[3][4][5]
Background[edit]
Marzouca was born in Miami, FL to a Jamaican father and American mother. He spent his childhood in his mother's hometown of Nashville, TN, until moving to Montego Bay, Jamaica at the age of 13. There, he was introduced to his Jamaican roots and became a reggae/dancehall DJ. While attending Cornwall College, Jamaica, Marzouca honed his skills playing the local circuit, and his love for music deepened. After graduating high school, Marzouca attended Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL, and graduated with an Associate of Science degree in Recording Arts.[6]
Career[edit]
In 1999, Marzouca moved back to Miami and joined Circle House Studio, owned by reggae band Inner Circle. During his tenure there he worked with Lenny Kravitz, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias, José Feliciano, Mobb Deep, various Cash Money Records artists, and others.[1]
Marzouca then went on to work at Stephen Marley's studio, The Lion’s Den, and engineered on several Grammy-winning projects including Damian Marley's 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock.[1][2]
In 2011, Marzouca joined producer Jim Jonsin at his Parkland Playhouse studio. While Marzouca served as in-house engineer at the Playhouse, he also took on several other roles including creative consulting, new talent development, and negotiating publishing splits. When Jonsin was chosen to participate in American Idol (season 10) as a mentor to the contestants, Marzouca was brought to Los Angeles as part of Jonsin's team, and recorded Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, Haley Reinhart and others.
In 2015, Marzouca joined forces with fellow mix engineer Rob Marks, whose credits include Ludacris, Nas, Eminem, T.I., and more.[7] Currently they collaborate on the majority of their mix projects, and have also begun working as a production team. In 2022, Marzouca and Marks received their first Grammy for production, for SOJA's Beauty in the Silence.[8][2][9]
Notable Projects[edit]
In 2016, Marzouca mixed the record "Wait for It" by Usher. The song was part of The Hamilton Mixtape, which featured songs from Lin Manuel Miranda's 2015 Broadway musical Hamilton, performed by various artists.[10]
In 2018, Marzouca mixed the record "The Champion" by Carrie Underwood, which was recorded for The 2018 Super Bowl. The song was also featured throughout NBC’s coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.[11] [12] [13]
