Noor is a Pakistani short film directed by Umer Adil and written by Farah Usman. The film centers around the stigma of refractive errors such as myopia and wearing of spectacles consequently. The lead cast of the film includes Tanisha Shameen, Sarwat Gillani, Omair Rana and Mizna Waqas. The film premiered on 13 January 2023 on YouTube.[2]

The film was co-produced by Sightsavers as a part of raising awareness about eye health in children.[3] At the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the film was shortlisted in the category of Best Health Film in February 2023,[4] and won in the same category the following month.[5]

Plot[edit]

Noor belongs to a middle-class family and is a student of primary education. She has a problem of refractive error and manages her daily routine with her weak eyesight due to her father's fear, who doesn't like to wear eyeglasses by her mother who also has the same problem.

One day, an opthalmologist visits the school for the checkup of the students. Noor doesn't want to check her eyes but her teacher forces her and the doctor provides her with eyeglasses after her complete checkup. Her mother advises her to not wear it in front of her father. The father sees her in glasses and gets angry on her. He breaks the glasses and throws away the poster which she was making for her class competition. At night, her grandmother wakes up due to pain in her kidney. Her father is about to give her the medicine when Noor wearing glasses notices that the medicine is expired. Her mother gives Noor the correct medicine and Noor gives it to their grandmother. At that moment, the father realises that how wrong he was that he deprived her daughter of her right of proper eye care.

The next day, every student submit his poster but Noor doesn't. When teacher asks her about it she tells that she doesn't made. Meanwhile, her father enters in the classroom and gives her poster and her repaired glasses.

At the annual Cannes Film Festival, the film won in the category of "Best Health Film".[6]
