Norma Shirley (August 13, 1938 - November 1, 2010) was a Jamaican chef and culinary legend who won many culinary awards including the Prime Minister's Award for culinary excellence. One of her restaurants Norma's on the Terrace was named one of the 60 Best Restaurants in the World by Condé Nast Traveler.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Norma Shirley was born as Norma Elise Smith on 1938 in Saint James Parish, Jamaica to Lucy Gibson and Verley Smith. When Shirley was still a child, her parents moved to the United States in search of work, leaving her in the care of her grandparents. She attended St. Hugh's boarding school in Kingston before graduating in 1954. After abandoning her aspirations of becoming an architect or designer, she began studying surgical nursing at Southern General hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. After graduating, she began working as a helicopter rescue nurse.

Personal Life[edit]

Norma Shirley met her husband Michael Shirley in the early 190s after moving back to Jamaica. The two met at the University of West Indies, while Norma Shirley was working as a surgical nurse and Michael Shirley as a anesthesiologist. They were married in 1965.
