From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ocean Child is an American indie rock music project founded in 2019 by singer-songwriter Marco Landaverde. In the recording studio, Landaverde writes, records, performs, and produces all of the project's music. As a touring act, Ocean Child currently consists of Marco Landaverde (vocals, lead guitar), Hyra Witter (drums), Ellie Belen (guitar) and Gabe Michael (bass guitar). They are based in Chicago, Illinois, United States.

Ocean Child first gained public attention in 2022 with his single "Maye" which made it to Spotify's Fresh Finds playlist and was added to 700 playlists since its debut. His debut extended play (EP), titled "How To Keep Someone From Disappearing" which included his popular single, Pink Lemonade was released in 2019, and was followed up with four subsequent singles. In March 2022 he performed at the House of Blues Chicago as the pre-show act for Irish rock band, Inhaler. Later that year in October 2022, he won the Star Course at UIUC competition and was selected by indie pop band, SALES to open their show at Foellinger Stadium in Champaign, Illinois. In September 2023, Ocean Child performed on the Goose Island Stage at Chicago's largest festival, Taste of Chicago in front of 120,000 people at Grant Park. Landaverde released his second EP, titled Camouflage, in 2023.

Early life and education

Marco Landaverde was born in Evanston, Illinois to a Filipino American mother and El Salvadoran father and raised in Chicago, Illinois. At age 13, he started playing the acoustic guitar, and at age 14, began guitar lessons at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music learning both acoustic and electric guitar. Landaverde wrote and produced his first song at age 16 from his basement, and later performed at local talent shows and open mic nights so that he could practice performing in front of a live audience. He attended Niles West High School, then University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana for his freshman year of college before transferring to Depaul University in his junior year to study Psychology.

Artistry

With soulful and raspy vocals, surf-esque indie rock hooks, and hazy production, Landaverde describes his music as indie rock. He cites early influences to his music as The Beatles and Arctic Monkeys and was heavily influenced by his love for nostalgic indie and 60's rock. An avid reader of novels and deep thinker, Landaverde's artistry in music is inspired by stories written by Haruki Murakami and merges his love for books and philosophy into his music. As a songwriter and producer, his song "Benton Steps" took him out of his comfort zone with Landaverde deliberately pushing himself creatively. "I put strong emphasis on texture and groove on this track, pushing my ears to achieve this erratic sound. I wanted the groove to feel fast and slow at the same time, while guitars sound harsh, squashed and dry in the mix. The bass is obtuse and syncopated, and I purposely withdrew it at certain part of the song to leave the listener wanting for more." Not expecting for the single to do well, "Benton Steps" is Ocean Child's #2 most streamed song across his entire library.
