Old Airport Road Food Centre is a major hawker centre in Geylang, Singapore. The hawker centre has 4 stores that have received the Michelin Bib Gourmand.[1][2][3][4]

Etymology[edit]

Old Airport Road Food Centre is named after the Old Airport Road. During the 20th century, Old Airport Road was part of Kallang Airport's runway.[5][6] Following the closure of the airport in 1955, Old Kallang Airport Estate was created. Redevelopment took place and the road was expanded.[7][8] The road was named Constellation Road,[9] before being renamed Old Airport Road.

History[edit]

Prior to the building of Old Airport Road Food Centre, Kallang Estate Food Centre did not have enough space to accommodate all the street hawkers who worked at Kallang Airport Estate. Therefore, there was a need for a permanent solution. The solution came in 1972, with the plan to build Old Airport Road Hawker Centre. It will help to resettle street hawkers found around the estate.[10]

The hawker centre was built with food stalls on the ground floor and shopping on the upper level. When it was completed, it was considered to be a modern hawker centre.[11] It cost $2.5 million and accommodated 312 stalls, 176 of them related to food.[10]

The food centre underwent upgrading between 2006 and 2007. The facelift cost $5.8 million. The seating capacity was increased to 1904 with new dining areas.[10]
