Chestnut Grove Cemetery "Turkey Foot Cemetery" is located on Chestnut Grove Drive in Olmsted Falls, Ohio. It runs adjacent to the Rocky River. Old Chestnut Grove Cemetery is the oldest cemetery located in Olmsted Falls. The cemetery was established in 1854 and was initially called "Turkey Foot Cemetery" due to the many turkeys that roosted near it.[1]. This cemetery is the resting place of settlers from New England and veterans from six wars. In 1961, The Daughters of the American Revolution documented the tombstones engravings and cenotaphs.

Burials within this cemetery range from 1831 to 2020s. The population of those resting within the cemetery are veterans from the American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican American War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War and Regular Service[2]. There are also two potters fields to the left of the eneterance gate.

History[edit]

In 1855, Olmsted Falls was deeded three and a half acres of land from Oscar and Susan Kendall to establish a cemetery[3]. In 1887, Sam Broady built a sandstone structure as a temporary holding place until burials could be conducted. Then, in 1825, Hannah Lewis gave the cemetery another three and a half acres. In 2011, the Union Cemetery Association and The Ohio Historical Society erected an Ohio Historical Marker at the cemetery.

Notable Interments[edit]

The Descendants of William Bradford (the Govenor of Plymouth for thirty years between 1621 and 1657) are buried in Chesnut Grove Cemetery. Hosea Bradford and family were the Great grandchildren of William Braford.

Julie Carter Northrop, who is the granddaughter of Clevelands first permanant settlers Lorenzo Carter. Lorenzo Carter was a frontiersman, community leader and tavernkeeper. The Carters' family built a wodden cabin at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River that served as a an inn and jail[4]

Urban Legends[edit]

The Witch's Hill[edit]

Old Chestnut Grove Cemetery is the location of a local urban legend spread by paranormal groups and websites[5]. The story claims a woman was accused of witchcraft and was executed at the location. It is said an iron gate was put around the tree where she was executed. The story claims that "bad things" will happen to those who get near the spot[6].

Ashtabula Disaster[edit]

In December of 1876, a train called The Pacific Express for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway company was passing over a bridge when it suddenly collapsed due to the weight of the train and the heavy snow.[citation needed] The train fell into the river below, its oil lantern and coal catching fire. This incident is called the Ashtabula River Railroad Disaster. About 92 out of the 160 people aboard were killed and, it is claimed, that many of the passengers were never found. Those that were found were held and buried at Chestnut grove Cemetery. Visitors claim to see the figures of those who lost their lives during the disaster as well as hear childrens laughter[7].

Paranormal[edit]

Parnormal groups and other indiviudals have claimed to caputre, EVP and orb evidence in the cemetery, Others have claimed to hear voices[8].
