Oliver Hill (born July 30, 1990) is a songwriter, producer, string arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and film composer based in Los Angeles.[1]
Early life[edit]
Hill was raised in Pleasantville, NY. Between 2006-2012 he constructed 16 crossword puzzles for The New York Times.[2] He graduated from Yale University in 2012 with a B.A. in music theory, winning the Beekman Canon Prize for his thesis on the chamber music of Johannes Brahms.[3]
Career[edit]
Hill has written string arrangements for artists such as Dirty Projectors, Helado Negro, Kevin Morby, Wet, Sharon van Etten, Broken Bells, Cassandra Jenkins, Benjamin Booker, Sam Evian, and Vagabon, along with touring regularly as a violist, pianist, and guitarist. [4]
His former band Pavo Pavo released two records to critical acclaim: 2016's Young Narrator in the Breakers ("a real gem ... undoubtedly hip yet simultaneously geeky," AllMusic)[5] and 2019's Mystery Hour (“a quietly poetic record that explores the stuff of life, love, and loss with a clear head,” Pitchfork)[6].
Hill is currently one-third of the songwriting collective Coco, who's 2021 debut amassed millions of Spotify streams and was described as "bold, striking pop that seems to be filtered in from another dimension" (CLASH)[7]. He also releases songs and instrumental music under the name Dustrider.[8]
He has produced several albums, including two for Tall Heights[4]. As a film composer, he has scored shorts for The New York Times,[9] and the feature All Happy Families by Haroula Rose. [10]
