Phoenix Design (proper spelling PHOENIX) is a German design company headquartered in Stuttgart. It was founded in 1987 by the industrial designers Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr and is considered one of the world's leading independent design studios in product and interaction design..[1] [2][3]Currently, the company has about 80 employees in Stuttgart, Munich and Shanghai.

History[edit]

Before founding PHOENIX, Andreas Haug was a partner of Hartmut Esslinger at Frog Design[4], where he met and worked with Tom Schönherr. After the company's geographical focus shifted increasingly to California due to the close cooperation with Steve Jobs and Apple[5], they founded the PHOENIX studio in Stuttgart-Vaihingen in 1987. Since its founding, the design company has maintained a close collaboration with Hansgrohe[6], the sanitary technology manufacturer from Schiltach- a cooperation that today is considered groundbreaking, especially in Germany, to bring design into bathroom equipment[2].

Between 1988 and 2013, PHOENIX cooperated with the consumer electronics manufacturer Loewe. It was, among other things, responsible for developing the circular control element that shaped the appearance of many of the brand's products for years. In addition, the design studio further expanded its position in sanitary design in the 1990s through its collaboration with Duravit and Kaldewei. In 1995, PHOENIX headquarters were relocated to Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt.

Through close cooperation with manufacturers of mobile phones such as Siemens, Gigaset and Huawei, interface and interaction design areas became crucial for PHOENIX in the 2000s. As a design partner of Viessmann, the company created the first digital control elements and the entire visual product language for its heating and energy systems. By developing a cross-product design language for the laser technology division of the machine manufacturer Trumpf, the design studio increasingly established itself in capital goods design. At the same time, the Chinese market became essential for PHOENIX through cooperation with companies such as Huawei and Haier, which resulted in establishing a branch office in Shanghai in 2017. Two years earlier, another location was open: Munich[5].

In 2018, PHOENIX was awarded the honorary "Design Team of the Year" title at the Red Dot Design Awards[7] for its work. It is now considered one of the most successful design studios in the world, with over 950 design awards.

Areas of activity[edit]

According to its statements, PHOENIX pursues a holistic design view and focuses on self-explanatory interactions between user and product[8]. The goal is to make the identity of brands tangible in a touching way and to develop products into real personalities.

The company's core competencies lie in product and interaction design, strategic consulting and corporate design. The design studio mainly serves traditional and family-owned companies and corporate groups in the DACH region and Chinese regions. It develops products for various industries, including bathroom and kitchen design, consumer electronics, household appliances, medical technology and telecommunications[9].

Cooperation with customers[edit]

PHOENIX works with numerous established companies from the German economy and worldwide. Customers include Audi, Bosch, Fraunhofer, Hansgrohe, Huawei, LG, Mercedes-Benz, Miele, Deutsche Telekom, Vorwerk and Zeiss. Due to the multiple developments, the estimated number of users of products designed by PHOENIX is more than a million[10]
