Portsmouth North End Cycling Club (PNECC) is a cycling club based in Portsmouth, UK and the Borough of Havant, UK. The club is affiliated to British Cycling (located within the British Cycling South Region), Cycling Time Trials (Southern Region), Wessex CX League and Cycling UK. The club is an advocate for cycling sport in the local area. The club organizes is community based and ran in accordance with Sport England and British Cycling guidelines. The club is based at Mountbatten Velodrome and organises training and social rides, social events and road races, closed circuit races and time trials.
Club Origin and[edit]
Portsmouth North End Cycling Club (PNECC) was founded 1900, in the City of Portsmouth, UK. The origins for the club trace back to the historic cycling track in “North End Park” Portsmouth which has appeared in records from 1896.
Pre WW1 PNECC grew in strength, racing almost exclusively at Alexandra Park Velodrome. (Now the Mountbatten Centre). In 1907 The City of Portsmouth opened Alexandra Park in 1907 incorporating the velodrome
Racing members rode in a white top adorned with black and red (actually ‘huntsman’s pink’).Riders on group rides wore tweed plus-fours and an early Club rule was that all members had to wear their small brass PNECC badge or risk being fined tuppence by the Club Captain!
Olympians and Commonwealth Medalist[edit]
In 1908, Clarence ‘Clarrie’ Brickwood Kingsbury of Portsmouth North End Cycling Club won two gold medals at that year’s Olympic Games.
In May 1955 Harry Jackson became a member, and after national success is awarded Honorary Life Membership January 1962, Harry was aged just 20. Harry would go on to competed internationally at the 1964 Summer Olympics and the 1968 Summer Olympics. Harry represented England and won a bronze medal in the 4,000 metres individual pursuit at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia.
Former club members include British professional cyclist Jessica Finney.
