Raid on Hwacheon Dam in May 1951

During the Korean War, the South Korean Army's 6th Division, led by Jang Do-young, and the Chinese Army's 63rd Division fought near the dam for four days starting on May 24, 1951, and the South Korean Army defeated the Chinese Army, killing approximately 21,550 Chinese soldiers. (Died: 21,550, POW: 2,617) South Korea is known to have turned the lake red by throwing the bodies of Chinese soldiers into the dam lake. The Battle of Paro Lake was said to be the biggest victory for the South Korean Army during the Korean War. In 1955, after the end of the war, South Korean President Rhee Syngman visited the dam lake and named it Paro Lake to mean "defeating the Barbarians." As of 2019, there is a monument to Paro Lake by President Rhee Syngman.[1][2]
