Paul Nedzela (born 12 March, 1984) is an American jazz saxophonist from New York City, New York. He is a member of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and has collaborated with artists including Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Paul Nedzela was born on March 12, 1984 in New York City. He frequented Stuyvesant High School.[2]

After graduating high school, Nedzela decided to continue his musical studies in college. In 2006, he graduated with honors from McGill University in Montreal, Canada with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics. After receiving the Samuel L. Jackson scholarship award, he persisted in music at the Juilliard School and studied with Joe Temperley.[3] In 2008, he graduated with a Master of Music degree.

Career[edit]

After graduating, Nedzela started his career by performing and recording with artists including Chick Corea, Benny Golson, Paquito D’Rivera, Wayne Shorter, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Branford Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon and Herlin Riley.[citation needed]

In 2013, Nedzela took over Temperley's chair in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He has toured with the orchestra all around the world and regularly performed with it.[citation needed]

In 2019, Nedzela released his debut album, Introducing Paul Nedzela. He composed a 9-track setlist on the album and included an arrangement of Kurt Weill's My Ship. He recorded the album with fellow orchestra member and pianist Dan Nimmer along with two other young artists: bassist David Wong and drummer Aaron Kimmel.[citation needed]

Also in 2019, Nedzela release a single release: Lisa. This single was dedicated and paid homage to Cannonball Adderley.[4]

Nedzela also hosts his own quartet with Dan Nimmer, bassist Neal Miner, and Aaron Kimmel.[5]

Nedzela is widely regarded by critics and other musicians as one of the most prominent baritone saxophone artists alive. His musical tone while playing the bari sax is attributed to famous artists like Ronnie Cuber, Gerry Mulligan, and Pepper Adams. However, his experience reaches beyond the bari sax. He also plays the bass clarinet in the JLCO to match the lower register of sound. Differently, he also has lots of experience in the higher register while playing the soprano sax and clarinet. This blend of high and low tones give me a very large field of expertise.[6]

The JAZZIZ magazine named Nedzela a Critic's Pick in 2019 because of his superior sound and artistry.[7]
