Payton Elizabeth Linnehan (born March 25, 2001) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward for Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League. She was drafted 11th overall in the 2024 NWSL Draft after concluding her collegiate career at Penn State University.
Early life[edit]
Daughter of Sheri and Sean Linnehan, Linnehan was raised in Douglas, Massachusetts[1]. She started playing youth soccer when she was about 5 years old[2]. Linnehan played club soccer for FC Stars of Massachusetts starting at 12 years old [2] She attended Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, playing two years for their soccer team before choosing to focus on club soccer [3][4].
Collegiate career[edit]
Linnehan played collegiate soccer for the Penn State Nittany Lions. She scored 34 goals and assisted 24 more in 90 games of her career[5].
She scored two hat tricks at Penn State: One in the first half of a 2021 match against La Salle[6] and another against Central Connecticut in their opening match of the 2023 NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament[7].
Professional career[edit]
The Portland Thorns chose Linnehan with the 11th pick of the 2024 NWSL Draft[8][9]. She signed for a two-year contract with a mutual third-year option[10].
International career[edit]
Linnehan played on the U-15, U-17 and U-23 teams of the U.S. women's national soccer program[11]. She won the Golden Boot in the 2016 CONCACAF Girls' U-15 Championship for scoring the most goals in the tournament.
