Pelomedusa olivacea is a freshwater turtle that lives in shallow waters. Its diet includes fish, crabs, molluscs, birds and small mammals. Although native to Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal, its distribution has spread due its involvement in the worldwide pet trade. In 2017, P. olivacea carcases were found in a suburban wetland ecosystem in Italy. Since the species is traded widely in Rome, they are most likely the result of pet release.^[1]
