Peter J. Ortel (June 27, 1940 – October 28, 2022) was an American woodcarver, artist, and retired firefighter, renowned for his significant contributions to the art of caricature carving. He was born in Bronx, New york June 27, 1940. Peter J. Ortel passed away Friday, October 28, 2022[1]

Career[edit]

Peter J. Ortel had a diverse and impactful career that unfolded across military service, firefighting, gold leaf decoration, and woodcarving. A proud US Army Veteran, Peter served as a Military Police Officer from August 1961 to July 1963.

After a 21-year career with the New York Fire Department NYFD, retiring from Rescue 3 in 1987, Peter transitioned to gold leaf decoration, designing intricate scrolls and hand lettering on fire trucks.

Discovering a passion for woodcarving, Peter became a National Award Winner and woodcarving instructor, actively teaching and contributing to organizations like the Caricature Carvers of America.

Known for finding humor in everyday situations, Peter often sketched cartoons during his time in the dynamic environment of New York City and the firehouse.

Hooked on caricature carving since his first formal lesson in 1989, Peter combined his love for cartooning with wood, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.[2]

His love for the Fire Department, those who served, those lost while serving, and those who continue to serve, was never-ending. Following the September 11 attacks, where the entire company of Rescue 3 who were working that day lost their lives, Peter volunteered to search and recover at Ground Zero. He carved a beautiful statue in recognition of the 343 Brothers who perished, and that statue still sits in the Fire Station of Rescue 3,FDNY.

Awards[edit]

Peter Ortel was a renowned woodcarver who won several awards for his work. He was a member and past president of the Caricature Carvers of America, as well as a member of the National Woodcarvers of America, Waterway Woodcarvers, Charlotte Woodcarvers, and Cape Fear Woodcarvers. Peter Ortel’s biggest success was winning the Best of Show award and People’s Choice award at the 2000 International Woodcarvers Congress in Davenport, Iowa for his carving called “Love”. He also won many other awards and taught carving classes around the country.[3]
