History[edit]

On 6 December 2005, Liz was given a frozen family sized meat pie for her birthday at the Albion Hotel, Parramatta. She was very happy as she prefers pie to cake. There was, however an issue. She did not have an oven to cook the pie.

That same year Julie was given a BBQ fish cooker for Christmas, along with a frozen (wrapping paper and all) dead fish. Liz and Julie decided that the best way to consume these gifts was to hold a special event. Thus 27 December 2005 became the first Pie and Dead Fish Day.

This event has become a tradition with Christmas gifts becoming designed to meet the purpose of the holiday that is held just two days later. For example, in 2006, Tim (Liz's husband) received a pie maker for Christmas.

Each year Pie and Dead Fish Day becomes bigger and better event. Whilst the event has been celebrated internationally for over 10 years, in 2020 satellite events began contributing to the official pie count.
