Draft:Piratas Unidos Argentinos

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Piratas Unidos Argentinos (United Argentine Pirates in English), also known by its initials PUA[1] was a hacker group based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, founded in 1986 and considered to have been the first hacker group in Latin America. The group was founded by the hackers then known as Doctor Trucho, Chacal and Nibbler, as documented in the book "Llaneros Solitarios. Hackers, la guerrilla informática" written by Fernando Bonsembiante and Raquel Roberti and published by Espasa-Calpe in 1995.[2]

Unlike more recent hacker groups, PUA's activities were not primarily criminal, but fundamentally of discovery, when most of the world's computer networks were not publicly or freely accessible. As Chacal (Jackal) stated in an interview given at the time: "The well-understood hacker is a kind of Robin Hood of information, who allows everyone to access information that otherwise remains hidden."[3]

The identities of the founders of PUA were most recently revealed as that of current American media entrepreneur Pablo Kleinman, who used the alias Doctor Trucho[citation needed] and that of the pundit and network security consultant Daniel Sentinelli, who used the alias Chacal.[4]

The organization ceased to operate as such in 1991, when one of its founders returned to live in the United States.[5]
