Pookiparamba bus accident that happened on March 11, 2001 is the largest bus accidents in Kerala. The accident took place on National Highway 17 at Pookiparamba near Kottakkal in Malappuram district.The accident was caused due to collision and overturning of a private bus named Pranavam that was coming from Guruvayur to Thalassery. The death toll was 44 and all death were caused due to burns suffered from bursting of fuel tank.
The bus was overloaded and over speeding in an attempt to overtake a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus going in same direction.
Consequences[edit]
The majority of the causalities were to women and kids. The toll went up due to lack of emergency door in the bus.
Following this accident, for a brief time the reserved seats of women were shifted to the back side of the bus and proposals for making emergency exits mandatory were taken up.
