History[edit]

The Portonovo Port is situated at the mouth of Vellar river which comes from the Coromandel plains to the Bay of Bengal. This place has the sea on the right side and the flow of the Vellar River to the Bay of Bengal. The Portuguese were invited to trade here by Gingee Krishnappa Nayaka who built this port in 1590.[4]

This port carries on a busy trade with Ceylon, Acheng, Penang and Singapore. Steamers of the British India Steam Navigation Company (BISN) anchor 2 miles offshore in 4 1/2 to 5 feet of water and sail to Singapore once a fortnight. Goods are shipped and landed at the Government Jetty opposite the Custom House, where about twenty boats are available.[5]

The French was keen on collecting commodities from trading centers in the hinterland for export in 1674. Merchants were dispatched to various places to procure cotton textiles. Different types of cotton fabrics, such as bleached, unbleached, coarse cloth, and rough cloth, were brought from Porto Novo.

From Porto Novo, where the French had trading houses and produced cloths for the company’s purposes, various types of cotton cloth, blue piece goods, handkerchiefs, brown cloth, long cloth, and Dutch sorts were carried by merchants for shipment to Mocha, Manila, and French islands via Pondicherry.[6]
