Dr. Rias Johann van Wyk was a scholar, author, and global authority specializing in technology management. He was the director of Technoscan Centre.[1], a research and consulting organization that pioneered technological awareness and wisdom.

He was the former director of the Management of Technology Program at the University of Minnesota, where the Rias Van Wyk Fellowship was established to support MOT students focusing on technology foresight and forecasting. The fellowship honors the legacy of Dr. Rias van Wyk, who was the W.R. Sweatt Visiting Chair in Technological Leadership (1992-2003) and the former Director of Graduate Studies for the MOT program.[2]

Van Wyk was also a professor extraordinaire at the University of Stellenbosch.[3]

Van Wyk had a master’s degree from Harvard University, where he focused on science, technology, and public policy. He also had a doctoral degree from the University of Stellenbosch, where he studied the fundamental nature of technology.

He was an authority on strategic technology analysis (STA), a method of identifying and evaluating the potential impact of emerging technologies on society and Environmental Hygiene[4]

Technology: Its Fundamental Nature[5] This is a book published in 2017, in which Van Wyk expands on his previous book, Technology: A Unifying Code. He explores the deeper aspects of technology, such as its origin, essence, purpose, and destiny. He also discusses the ethical and spiritual dimensions of technology and how it can be used to benefit humanity and the planet.

Technology: A Unifying Code, was published in 2004. [6] In this book, he proposed a new way of understanding and categorizing technology based on its functionality. He argued that technology can be divided into nine fundamental functions: process matter, process energy, and transport information.

He also introduces the concept of the Omega Map[7], a framework for anticipating and analyzing the evolution of technology.

Various institutions and organizations have recognized Van Wyk for his contributions to the field of technology management. He has received the Outstanding Educator Award from the International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT)[8], and the Distinguished Service Award from the Portland International Center for Management of Engineering and Technology (PICMET). He has also been named a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS).

Van Wyk was a frequent speaker and consultant on technology-related topics. He worked with various corporations, governments, and non-governmental organizations around the world.
