Requal is a free, open-source, cross-platform, collaboration-enabled computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) designed to support the reproducibility of qualitative coding.[1] It is a Shiny web application in R, accessible online and offline that allows users to import and annotate text documents with custom codes, which can then be filtered and exported. Through built-in modules, Requal helps users increase the transparency and reflexivity of their analyses.[2]

Requal has various features, including user and project management, data management, annotation, coding, exporting, monitoring, and reporting.

Namely, it can:

  • Create and remove projects
  • Create users and add them to projects
  • Administer user permissions within a project
  • Administer custom user attributes
  • Import or create text documents
  • Add, merge, or delete colored codes
  • Add or delete categories
  • Annotate data with codes
  • Write free memos
  • Filter and export annotated segments
  • Monitor intercoder agreement both numerically and graphically[3]
  • Monitor intercoder agreement for custom categories of coders
  • Monitor all activities within a project in detailed log
  • Export log

Access[edit]

Requal can be installed on a desktop or laptop computer and used offline; this option is recommended for individual users. For teams or classes, the server mode is recommended, where multiple users can work on the project at the same time and can also use modules that increase the transparency and reflexivity of the analysis.
