Rick Grimes Jr.,[1] better known as R.J.,[2] is a fictional character from AMC's horror drama series The Walking Dead, portrayed by Antony Azor.[3] He is the son of protagonists Rick Grimes and Michonne.[4][5][6] The character was created for the television series by showrunner Angela Kang[7] [8] on its 9th season and does not have a counterpart in the comics on which the series is based. The character was introduced in the sixth episode of the ninth season at 5 years old.

Appearances[edit]

Season 9[edit]

Rick Grimes Jr. first appeared in the episode "Who Are You Now?" as a 5 year old running to Michonne's arms while being watched from the outside of their house by Magna.[3]

During the winter, RJ stays with his sister Judith Grimes and some other community members during a large blizzard in Alexandria. In the morning, Michonne arrives with Daryl Dixon and the Kingdom community. Elated to see her son again, she hugs him and they start a snowball fight.

Season 10[edit]

In "Lines We Cross", R.J. and Judith play with some shells that R.J. found in the Oceanside community. As they dump out their seashells in the sand, a Whisperer mask falls out. Judith tells R.J. the story about Rick blowing the bridge to save his friends. "He died and went to heaven," Judith tells R.J. about "the brave man" in her story.[9] Michonne walks up to hug them, telling them she'd do anything to protect them. Suddenly, an explosion rings out and everyone looks up to witness streaks of fire cascading from the sky. R.J. then stays at the camp being looked after by his sister as the adults deal with the situation.

In "Ghosts", while the Alexandria residents face against waves of walkers pouring onto the community gates over the next 49 hours, R.J. sleeps in his house while being looked after by Judith.

In "Silence the Whisperers", R.J. and his family dine together and share a laugh as they are joined by Daryl.

In "Walk with Us," Earl Sutton leds the kids in a escapes from the Hilltop's destruction. The kids are found by Daryl, Ezekiel and Jerry.

In "What We Become," Michonne speaks in the radio with R.J. and Judith after leaving the naval base, with R.J. calling himself "Little Brave Man" after his father. Michonne reveals that she has found proof that Rick might still be alive somewhere. Judith encourages her mother to go after her father, suggesting that Rick might need Michonne more than they do now that Alpha's dead. Michonne agrees to go.

Season 11[edit]

In "Lockdown," R.J. and the other children are targeted by Lance Hornsby's spies, but they are protected by Jerry.

During the penultimate episode of the series "Family," Judith passes the sheriff's hat that once belonged to Rick, Carl and then to her down to RJ.[1]

In "Rest in Peace," Daryl departs to try to find Rick and Michonne, saying goodbye to R.J. and Judith. Looking out over the fields of the Commonwealth with Judith, she tells him "we get to start over. We're the ones who live."

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live[edit]

R.J. appears several times in Michonne's flashbacks throughout her journey.

In the series finale, Michonne finally contacts Judith with the news that she's coming home, having successfully found Rick. In a field, Rick and Michonne are reunited with their children[10] and R.J. asks his father if he's "The Brave Man",[11] after he says yes R.J. tells him he knew his father would come back because he believed he would. The Grimes family then embraces each other.
