Rob Shaw

Rob Shaw (born 1981) is a Canadian television reporter and political journalist.

He works for CHEK News as its political correspondent covering politics and engaging politicians like David Eby[1], Justin Trudeau[2], Pierre Poilievre[3], and Kevin Falcon[4] on today's most pressing political issues.

Biography and Early life[edit]

Rob Shaw was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia and grew up in Cedar – a small rural community on Vancouver Island. His obsession with the news began early as his parents (both teachers) subscribed to half a dozen newspapers and watched the nightly TV news on CHEK and BCTV.

At 16, Shaw wrote his first story for the Ladysmith Chronicle community newspaper.

He went on to receive an undergraduate degree in journalism from the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto before starting his career interning at the National Post, Globe and Mail, and the Vancouver Province.

Career[edit]

In 2005, Shaw returned to Vancouver Island to report for the Times Colonist.

In 2014, he started at the Vancouver Sun as their Legislative Reporter covering breaking news on topics ranging from the BC governments Covid-19 pandemic response[5], to business news and the impacts of new legislation.

Currently, Shaw appears on the ChekTV 5:00pm and 6:00pm nightly newscasts reporting live on B.C. politics.

He is heard weekly on CBC Radio as the political correspondent for the programs All Points West[6] and Radio West.[7]

Additionally, he hosts the only weekly B.C. political panel on TV, Political Capital,[8] which airs Sunday nights on CHEK TV and as an audio podcast version on all major platforms.[9]

Shaw also writes weekly political columns for Glacier Media publications[10]and the Northern Beat News.

Author[edit]

Shaw co-authored (with journalist Richard Zussman) the 2018 book A Matter of Confidence - The Inside Story of the Political Battle for BC [11], a behind-the-scenes look at the rise and fall of Christy Clark's BC Liberals, the return to power of the BC NDP, and what it means for British Columbia's political climate going forward. Shaw and Zussman covered every moment of the 2017 election cycle, illustrated by candid and extensive interviews with political insiders from both sides of the aisle ― including Christy Clark and John Horgan.

In 2019, the book was shortlisted for the Hubert Evans Prize for Non-Fiction.

The book received positive reviews, including from the former Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chrétien who wrote "Shaw and Zussman are good guides to take you through the eventful years of BC politics."

Awards and Recognition[edit]

In 2008, Shaw was nominated for a prestigious National Newspaper Award for reporting on policing issues.[12]

He is also a three-time Jack Webster Award for Excellence in Journalism winner and seven-time nominee in categories of Excellence in Legal Journalism, Best Breaking News Reporting, Excellence in Business/Industry/Economics Journalism[13] and Commentator of the Year.
