Ronnie Cummins (1946–April 26, 2023) was an American regenerative organic farming advocate and author and the founder of the Organic Consumers Association.[1][2][3]
Early life and education[edit]
Cummins was born Adrian Alton Abel on October 28, 1946, in Jefferson, Texas. His father, Jack, worked as an accountant for Gulf Oil in Port Arthur, Texas. His mother, Elise (Stout) Abel, was a homemaker. She died by suicide in 1951.[4]
He graduated with a degree in English and philosophy from Rice University in 1969.[4]
After college, he changed his name to Ronnie Cummins, the name of a boy born in 1946, the same year as he, and who died in 1954. According to his wife, he changed his name to escape reprisals from the Ku Klux Klan for his antiwar activities during his time at Rice.[4]
Career[edit]
Cummins was introduced to activism through opposing the Vietnam War and nuclear power. In the 1990s, he began to focus on organic food activism after being hired as a director of the Pure Food Campaign.[4]
Personal life[edit]
Cummins died on April 26, 2023 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The cause was bone and lymph cancer.[4]
