Run 3 is a platformer video game developed by Joseph Cloutier. Cloutier published the game for mobile on the Google Play Store on December 11th, 2013.[1] A year later on June 5th, 2014, he published the game as a flash game on Kongregate.[2] It is the third installment of the "Run" game series, taking the place of its two predecessors "Run" published in 2008 and "Run 2" in 2011.[3][4][5] Despite being the third game in the series it is widely known as the most popular of the three.[6][7] Due to the easy availability of the game on educational websites such as Cool Math Games or other browser game websites, the game is commonly played among younger children and students who generally cannot access personal computers to download larger games.

The game itself is based in space and features ten gray alien characters which provide different advantages and skill. The player runs through levels which have holes and other obstacles that create a challenge, in an attempt to reach the end and further progress. The game features two game modes, explore mode and infinite mode. The first of which has a tunnel based system where multiple levels are part of tunnels, and the second which features an infinitely long tunnel is traversed in order to collect the in-game currency, power shells. Within the Explore Mode, there are 309 levels within about 20 tunnels. The large amounts of individual levels and original gameplay style are what brought the game to fame.

History[edit]

Run 3 is the third game in the "Run" series. Employing previous help from artists Alex Ostroff and Jesse Valentine, also known as "F-777", the game was published onto the Google Play Store on December 11th, 2013.[1] Less than a year later, on June 5th, 2014, the game was published on Kongregate as an Adobe Flash game.[2] The game was based on the two previous installments of the series, "Run" and "Run 2", published in 2008 and 2011 respectively.[3][4][5] In 2017 the game was put up on Cool Math Games, a popular website that hosts games aimed at young adults and children.[8] Due to the popularity of Cool Math Games among young children who use the website at school to pass time, Run 3 became a popular game among students.[citation needed]

Gameplay[edit]

Run 3 is a single-player 3D platformer type video game based in a empty space universe with only tunnels branching out from a main planet, in which the levels are located. The tunnels feature short levels which are made of tiles and holes, where the player must maneuver through the level to make it to the end without falling into space. The player has 10 characters, 1 initially, that provide different abilities that help the player traverse different levels of difficulty. Characters are unlocked in cutscenes or by being purchased in the shop using the in-game currency, power shells.

The player has to ways of movement, horizontal movement using the arrow or A and D keys and jumping with the up arrow or space bar. The character moves forward itself at a predestined speed, disabling the players ability to slow down or move backwards. Upon moving horizontally, the player will end up on a different tile at an angle, which causes the tunnel itself to rotate as to where the player is always parallel to the tile it is standing on.

Game Modes[edit]

There are two main game modes, explore mode and infinite mode.

Explore Mode[edit]

Explore is the first and main game mode of Run 3. In Explore Mode the player traverses through different tunnels that are all mostly connected. The tunnels have several sets of levels in which the player must get through, passing a checkpoint for every level. The levels contain the normal tunnel tiles, stone tiles, called crumbling tiles, that when touched, the tile and all the connected tiles will fall, making it so the player can only jump on them once. There also also ice tiles, which provide several different boosts for different characters; conveyer tiles which push the player in a direction; and ramps, which allow the player to jump higher than normal.

Explore Mode features 309 levels, 65 of which are in the Main Tunnel. The rest of levels are in side tunnels, which are tunnels that separate from the Main Tunnels are certain levels. The side tunnels are all smaller than the Main Tunnel but contain more challenging levels for the player.

Infinite Mode[edit]

Infinite Mode is the second game mode in Run 3. It features a singular, infinite tunnel that is auto-generated using several level presets. The purpose of infinite mode is for the player to collect power shells and Infinite Mode achievements. The mode features a power shell counter and a distance counter. The game mode does not feature a respawn feature, so the player must try to get as far as possible to collect as many power shells and create new personal records for distance travelled. Infinite Mode also contains a box tile, which is a cube shaped tile that serves as a obstacle and also has an affect on the gravity of the player.

Characters[edit]

The game features ten different characters, each providing a different set of skills to the user.

  • The Runner is the main character, appearing in all three "Run" games. She is the first and default character the user receives when starting the game.
  • The Skater is another major character featured in all three games. He is unlocked after completing level 10 and is one of the fastest characters at 19 m/s.
  • The Lizard is a minor character that can be unlocked by completing level 40. It provides a jump boost for the user.
  • The Bunny is unlocked only after reaching eight achievements. It is the fastest character at 23.5 m/s and also provides a jump boost. Its downside is that it continuously jumps throughout levels.
  • The Gentleman can only be purchased in the shop for 2,000 power shells and provides abilities to make power shell collection easier.
  • The Duplicator is the most expensive character and can be purchased for 6,000 power shells (mobile) or 25,000 (browser). He provides a duplicate character with randomized jump and speed boosts.
  • The Child is unlocked by completing the Low-Power Tunnel level or by purchasing him in the shop for 2,000 power shells. He provides a jump boost and delays the time for crumbling tiles to fall.
  • The Pastafarian is a priest of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a reference to the real Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The character can only be purchased for 6,000 power shells in the shop.
  • The Student is a character described as being smart and a good scientist. She can be purchased for 10,000 power shells in the shop.
  • The Angel is a character that is described as being an engineer and also having a depreciating personality. He can only be purchased for 12,000 power shells in the shop.

Level Editor[edit]

The level editor is a feature implemented that allows the user to create and edit their own levels, however it is unavailable in HTML5 versions of the game.[9]
