Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sulaiman or SMK Sulaiman is a Public Secondary school located in Bentong, Pahang.

Opened since 1912, it is one of the oldest schools in Malaysia.

History[edit]

The school was opened in 1912 under the name Anglo-Chinese School. Mr. Goh Sam Yong was appointed as the first headmaster with 60 students and two teachers.

In 1932, Mr. Muthutamby was appointed as headmaster replacing Mr. Goh Sam Yong. In 1928 the number of students had increased to 200 people. Female students are also allowed to enter this school. In the same year, Mr. Appudarai began to hold the position as the third headmaster. Due to the economic downturn, the number of students has decreased with only 108 students with two teachers.

In 1939, the name of this school was changed to Sekolah Sulaiman Bentong. This event is in honor of Al-marhum Tengku Sulaiman ibni Al-marhum Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu'adzam Shah.

The Minister of Education at the time, Mohd Khir Johari officiated the opening of the new school building. Mr. Somasundram was replaced by Mr. Eddy Wee in 1965. Mr. RIS Stork assumed the position of headmaster in 1966, In 1980 the number of students increased to 1081 people. Puan Hew Yoon Yew took over as headmistress from April 1986-1990.

In 1997, Sekolah Menengah Sulaiman was renamed to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sulaiman at the direction of the Ministry of Education with the aim of standardizing all schools in Malaysia in order to promote a more robust education system.

In 2006, SMK Sulaiman was selected to hold the Kelas Rancangan Khas for the Form 1 students from Bentong who got excellent result in Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) by The Pahang Department of Education.

Achievements[edit]

In 2013, SMK Sulaiman was awarded the Sekolah Kluster Kecemerlangan (SKK) for excellence in Sports, Studies and Extracurricular Activity.
