Sabine Goodwin (born 22 October 1971) is an anti-poverty campaigner, 'cash first' advocate, charity director, and writer who has run the Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) since 2018.[1]

Biography[edit]

Sabine was formerly a television news and investigative journalist and began working with IFAN in February 2017.[2] As a food bank volunteer, she became aware of the scarcity of information available on independent food banks working outside of the Trussell Trust network and approached the newly formed IFAN with a plan to create a database of independent food banks working across the UK.[3]This list was first published in The Guardian in May 2017.[4]Sabine subsequently collaborated with Dr Rachel Loopstra at King's College London on a study of independent food banks operating across England.[5]

Sabine regularly represents IFAN in the media, at events, within advisory groups, at evidence-gathering sessions, in collaborative work with academics and at meetings with central, national and local government teams as well as elected representatives.[6] [7]She spearheaded the expansion of IFAN's UK-wide 'Worrying About Money?' cash first referral leaflet project beyond Scotland in late 2020.[8]There are now IFAN ‘Worrying About Money?’ leaflets in more than 80 local authorities in England.[9]

Through her work with IFAN, Sabine has championed what’s called a ‘cash first’ or income-focused approach to food insecurity and poverty based on learning from Scotland’s A Menu for Change project.[10] She has advocated for a ‘cash first’ approach in her writing, presentations, as a member of the Scottish Government’s Ending the Need for Food Banks Steering Group, and in numerous submissions and evidence-giving sessions.[11]

Sabine regularly writes for the Big Issue and the British Medical Journal and has been quoted numerous times in The Guardian, The Observer, The Independent, The Big Issue, The National, The Mirror and The Express.[12]Sabine has also been interviewed by BBC Radio 4’s BBC MoneyBox, LBC’s Shelagh Fogarty, LBC’s Nick Abbott, BBC News, ITV News and Channel 4 News.[13]
