Draft:Scientific transphobia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • Comment: I'm not convinced this has enough notability as a topic itself for an article; it'd likely be better placed as a section in the main Transphobia article. Most of the sources also don't discuss "Scientific Transphobia" as a phenomenon. CoconutOctopus talk 16:19, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Scientific transphobia is a type of transphobia supported by or based on misinformation excused as real science.[1] While the validity of transgender people is supported by science,[2] proponents of scientific transphobia often cite biology in order to discriminate against transgender people. Consequences of scientific transphobia are similar to those seen in general transphobia, including violence,[3] suicide,[4] bathroom bills,[5], and sports bans.[6]

Arguments[edit]

Pseudoscientific arguments are often used to discriminate against transgender people. Ben Shapiro, for example, has stated being transgender is a mental illness.[7] While gender dysphoria is recognized as a disorder in the DSM-5,[8] not all transgender people experience gender dysphoria, and being transgender itself is not seen as a disorder. Another argument is that chromosomes determine sex, and therefore gender is determined at birth. However, sex and gender are known to be separate. Proponents of scientific transphobia cite sex as a binary, but intersex people may present at birth as female while having XY chromosomes, or male while having XX chromosomes, or have extra chromosomes.[1]
