Sony Wonderverse is an indoor amusement park that is movie themed. Their first location opened on January 10, 2024 and is located at Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook, Illinois just roughly 16-18 miles west of Downtown Chicago. Many more locations are yet to open around the United States in the near future.[1]

Before Wonderverse[edit]

The building that Sony Wonderverse now resides in was a former Sears department store. It was built in 1962 and had a total of 250,000 square feet.[2] The interior of the store was like any other Sears department store from the 1960s. The exterior facade of the building was one of a kind. It had like this weird wavy brick on the mall entrance side where the classic Sears logo was as well as the parking lot entrance. The store was renovated in the late 1980s and early 2000s to make the store feel more up to date.[3]

In 2017, Sears temporarily closed their Oakbrook Center location for remodeling.[4] The store's facade was completely stripped as well as the interior. The old escalators and passenger elevator were removed as a result. The building's structural support system was used for remodeling keeping it original. The building was also extended another floor for a future tenant which would become Sony Wonderverse in the near future. Sears downsized to only one story in 2019 and six months later they closed their Oakbrook Center location for good.[5]

Kidzania originally was supposed to open their own location on the third floor but couldn't secure their lease.[6] In 2023, Sony Pictures Entertainment purchased the third floor of the building and started adding attractions.

Attractions[edit]

Sony Wonderverse features many immersive and interactive attractions. They have an escape room that is themed like the movie Uncharted (2022). They have bumper cars that is themed like Zombieland (2009). The main attraction at this location during the grand opening was the Ghostbusters VR Academy attraction. This attraction requires you to wear a virtual reality headset with a pre-installed experience. You learn how to become a "certified ghostbuster" and lets you be fully immersed. There are more attractions to discover and more attractions coming soon.[7]

There is also an arcade with Sony licensed arcade games and some regular modern arcade games.

Premier Dining & Lounging[edit]

Sony Wonderverse locations also feature a casual restaurant and bar. You can reserve the restaurant for your group and you can request your own meal. The bar is also Ghostbusters themed.[8]
