Sooyun Kim (born 1982) is a solo flute player, chamber musician at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, interdisciplinary artist, and professor of flute performance at the Longy School of Music of Bard College.

Early life and education[edit]

Kim was born in 1982 and grew up in Seoul, South Korea.  She made her concerto debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 10.  She studied under the tutelage of American flautist Paula Robison at the New England Conservatory.  She received a Bachelors degree ’04, Master of Music ’07, and Graduate Diploma ’09 from the New England Conservatory.

Career[edit]

Kim was a member of the Bowers Program of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center from 2009-2012.  In 2012, Kim performed her European debut recital at the Lourve Museum in Paris, France.  In the summer of 2012, she served as an artist-in-residence with the Danish Chamber Players] in Denmark.  In 2019, she began teaching at the Longy School of Music of Bard College as a professor of flute performance.

Awards[edit]

In 2010, she won a top prize at the ARD International Music Competition, the largest international classical music competition, becoming the first American since 1964 to win a top prize at the ARD Flute Competition.  She is also a winner of the George Solti Foundation Career Grant.
